Life-cycle assessment represents a potentially useful and powerful tool for identifying and maximizing the environmental benefits of pollution prevention. LCA can be used in a variety of ways ranging from a conceptual thought process to allow companies to think more broadly about their process or materials choices to a formal analytical process for supporting decisions. As software and databases expand, the routine use of LCA will become easier, but even at the present state of development, LCA can be effective in more fully informing the decision maker of potential environmental consequences.
