  1. Environmental Protection Agency, San Francisco, CA (United States). Region 9
This chapter focuses on some of the major statutory authorities consolidated in the Environmental Protection Agency. The Environmental Protection Agency currently implements sixteen major federal laws dealing with the environment. The role EPA plays in protecting human health and the environment is defined by federal legislation, which specifies the regulatory framework within which EPA works. EPA reviews the scientific literature and supports research within the agency and in academia to determine the specific actions necessary to carry out these laws. EPA works with governmental organizations and private groups on all levels that focus on public health and the environment. These groups include local and state agencies, Native American tribes, environmental organizations, and industry groups.
