NERVA Nuclear Subsystem: Progress Report, June 1, 1962 thru June 30, 1962
This report is submitted in partial fulfillment of Project NE 4002 under Subcontract NP-1 extension. Work was carried on during this report period in accordance with the planned continuation of the NERVA Nuclear Subsystem Program. A reactor assembly layout for the bottom loaded NRX-A reactor design was released for nuclear thermal and hydraulic analysis. A redesign of the NRX-A core support peripheral blocks was completed utilizing multiple tie rods. The design places the centroid of the load within the triangular tie rod array and is not subject to tipping. In the cooled bottom support plate effort study of the solid grid lens shaped support and the dished plate support has been suspended in favor of the tubular sandwich and a new forged and machined cooled bottom support arrangement. Studies of reactor layouts have shown that the seven element clustering scheme is somewhat restrictive, and the major effort is now on the designs using clusters of nineteen B-4 elements.
