A pin-loading tension test for evaluation of thin-walled tubular materials
- Studsvik Material AB, Nykoeping (Sweden)
In a number of cases the evaluation of cracking behavior in thin-walled tubular materials is required in the nuclear industry. Fracture toughness and hydrogen assisted crack propagation in irradiated Zircaloy cladding tubes and stress-corrosion crack growth in Alloy 600 steam generator tubing are of great importance. A new loading mode has been developed for thin-walled tubular materials. A notched ring specimen, which is cut directly from the original tubing and so represents its real structure, is loaded in tension through pins similar to the loading of a compact specimen for fracture mechanics testing. The first results, obtained for axially notched tubular specimens cut from different Zircaloy cladding, have illustrated a high sensitivity of the PL Tension Test both to material properties formed during manufacturing and to the environmentally induced property changes.
