Ageing of yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolytes at 1000{degree}C

10 compositions of YSZ (5.9-12 mol% Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}) from 5 manufacturers were subjected to measurements of electrical conductivity in air at 1000{degrees}C over a period of around 40 days. Samples with {<=}8 mol% Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} exhibited pronounced degradation with time, while compositions with 10 mol% and above were practically stable. The conductivity is initially at maximum around 8 mol% Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}, but is at maximum around 10 mol% after one month at 1000{degrees}C. Grain boundary resistance is not a problem at SOFC operating temperatures and is not part of the ageing process. There seems to be a correlation between grain boundary conductance and sinterability of powders from different manufacturers.
