The sol-gel route was used to process thin porous ZrO{sub 2} layers on tubular x-alumina substrates. The hydrolysis of Zr-n-butoxide at room temperature and the subsequent peptization by an inorganic acid lead to stable colloidal sols. To achieve crack-free ultrafiltration membranes, mixtures of the sols with organic binders were optimized, deposited on the substrates, dried and heat treated at different temperatures. Thickness, morphology, phase composition, pore size distribution and filtration properties of the membranes were analyzed.
