Pressure filtration of AlN-TiO{sub 2} slurries for the production of reaction hot-pressed Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/TiN composites

Ball milled slurries of TiO{sub 2} and AlN powder mixtures were used to prepare green bodies via pressure filtration and reaction hot-pressed to produce Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/TiN composites. Initial results on stabilized slurries showed segregation during the filtration process leading too poor green body homogeneity and porosity in the sintered composites. Flocculation of the slurry increased the filtration rate and reduced the segregation previously observed. The filtration kinetics in the pressure range 10-40 MPa were found to be parabolic for both the flocced and non-flocced slurries. The microstructure of the green bodies prepared from flocced slurries showed a coarser microstructure due to a homo-flocculation of the TiO{sub 2} particles. The final microstructure after reaction hot pressing was finer than that of the green bodies; a result of the reaction mechanism during the hot-pressing. The sintered composites showed improved mechanical properties and less scatter than composites produced from spray dried granules.
