Colloidal processing of ceramics-technology and science
- Institute for Surface Chemistry, Stockholm (Sweden)
Colloidal processing plays an important role in many technological manufacturing processes of advanced ceramics. Simple manipulations of the interparticle forces can be utilized for powder classification, facilitate mixing of multicomponent systems and rheology control in order to remove heterogeneities and to optimize the suspension properties. Recent applications have also involved the development of new near net-shape forming methods based on colloid science principles. It is possible to identify different approaches to refine and improve the colloidal processing concept in the future. A system approach where each forming method is treated as a unit operation can provide much insight into the interrelation between interparticle forces, powder properties and forming behaviour. A better fundamental understanding of the surface and colloid chemistry of the various systems and the rheological properties of the concentrated ceramic suspensions are identified as key areas where the scientific understanding today is rather poor.
