Ultrafine, amorphous Si/C/N powders with a controlled chemical composition were produced by Laser-Aerosol interaction from a mixture of hexamethyldisilazane and ammonia. The conversion process of amorphous Si/C/N particles to crystalline SiC-Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} nanocomposite powders was studied by XRD and 29-Si MAS NMR after several thermal treatments in nitrogen. All the powders stay amorphous below 1500{degrees}C, but the local environment around Si atoms changes, showing a gradual conversion of SiN{sub 4} tetrahedrons to SiCN{sub 3} and SiC{sub 2}N{sub 2} to end at SiC{sub 4} configuration, wich suggests a reaction between the Si/C/N network and a free carbone phase.
