Title: RH Packaging Operations Manual (Rev. 6)

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/989867· OSTI ID:989867

This procedure provides operating instructions for the remote-handled transuranic (RH-TRU) 72-B Waste Shipping Package (hereinafter referred to as "RH-TRU 72-B"). In this document, "Packaging" refers to the assembly of components necessary to ensure compliance with the packaging requirements (not loaded with a payload). "Package" refers to a Type B packaging that, with its radioactive contents, is designed to retain the integrity of its containment and shielding when subject to the normal conditions of transport and hypothetical accident test conditions set forth in 10 CFR Part 71. Before RH-TRU 72-B loading operations begin, loading procedures and revisions must be sent to the DOE Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO) at site.documents@wipp.ws for approval. Loading of the RH-TRU 72-B can be done one of two ways: on the cask trailer in the vertical position or by removing the cask from the trailer and loading it in an area designated for remote-handling. Two types of trailers were specially designed to transport the RH-TRU 72-B: a spread-axle trailer requiring a crane to rotate the cask and a cask uprighting trailer designed with built-in hydraulics to rotate the RH-TRU 72-B into the vertical position while on the trailer. The hydraulic power unit is a separate piece of equipment.
