This paper presents the results of a study carried out in the region of the Landes de Gascogne, France in which emissions of nitrogen compounds were measured on irrigated maize fields. Trace gas emission rates showed a strong correlation to soil characteristics and to the type and application of fertilizer used. Results indicated that in this area, nitrogen excesses were mainly released to the atmosphere, rather than leading to pollution of the ground water. 42 refs., 4 figs., 3 tabs.
