The Future of U.S. Science - To Follow or To Lead?

The message of the talk is simple. Since the end of WWII and Vannevar Bush's legendary report 'Science, The Endless Frontier,' the U.S. has enjoyed an extraordinary period of leadership in science and success in delivering its many benefits to the American people, indeed humanity throughout the world. But things change over a span of fifty years. The critical role of science, in particular, the federal investment in basic research, has gotten lost in a vast array of other societal concerns. Perhaps we are at a 'tipping point' with regard to U.S. science. If so, the stakes are high; and it is our responsibility to help the American people and their elected representatives get the message. I will describe some concerns I have about the future, comment on several recent reports, which I think are relevant, and attempt to offer some reasons to be optimistic.
