About fifty layered perovskite-like oxides, known as Aurivillius phases and represented by the general formula A{sub m-1}Bi{sub 2}B{sub m}O{sub 3m+3}, where m = 1,2,2.5,3,3.5,4, and 5, have been reported to date to exhibit high Curie temperatures and, consequently, to retain their ferroelectric properties over a wide temperature range. Their compositions, however, do not involve all of the possible combinations of atoms on the A and B sites, and, therefore, there is current interest in searching for new members of this family, based on earlier established relationships. The new bismuth containing layered perovskite SrBi{sub 3}Ti{sub 2}NbO{sub 12} synthesized in this work show a high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss in the range between 50 and 200 degrees C and undergoes a structural phase transformation at 168 degrees C. At room temperature, this mixed oxide has a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a=3.877 Angstroms and c=33.020 Angstroms. No ferroelectric or piezoelectric properties were detected in the range between 20 to 750 degrees C.
