The mechanical properties of metal reinforced ceramics with interpenetrating networks, especially Al/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} composites, are described. Tailoring these composites involves key parameters such as volume fraction of the ductile phase, mean metal ligament diameter or interfacial fracture toughness. The influence of these parameters on fracture strength and toughness is investigated. The current fracture mechanical understanding is presented and the influence of metal reinforcement on strength emphasized.
