Fabrication of polymer-derived micro-nano-structured Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}/SiC-composites
- Technische Hochschule Darmstadt (Germany); and others
Polyhydridochlorosilazane and polymethylvinylsilane have been used as polymer precursors to produce micro-nano-structured Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}/SiC-composites. The polysilazane was pyrolysed to amorphous Si-C-N powders while polyvinylsilane was used to coat {alpha}-Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} powder with a SiC-forming precursor. After pressureless liquid phase sintering and subsequent gas pressure sintering of the compacted as-synthesized powders in the presence of nitrogen atmosphere, the obtained microstructures were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). Nanosized SiC inclusions embedded in microcrystalline Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} grains were analysed by elemental mapping with electron spectroscopic imaging (ESI).
