Basing on the phase relationship study of the Y-Si-Al-O-N system, {alpha}`-{beta}`-sialon with YAG as the grain boundary phase is designed, and processed by two-step gas pressure sintering (GPS). The influence of the processing conditions on the microstructure and further on the mechanical properties are investigated. With increasing of the second step GPS temperature and holding time, the microstructure with elongated grains can be developed. The flexural strength increases from 612 to beyond 900 MPa, and the fracture toughness from 3.9 to 7.2 MPA.m{sup 1/2}. Crack bridging and crack deflection are identified to be the two main strengthening and toughening mechanisms for the materials.
