Qualification of the In-Situ Object Counting System (ISOCS) for Safeguards Measurements of Nuclear Waste Packages

Conference ·

Canberra’s In-Situ Object Counting System (ISOCS) is a portable and versatile gamma nondestructive assay instrument. ISOCS can perform quantitative measurements for characterization of various packages of waste generated during operation, decontamination and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. This paper presents the measurement results obtained on two ISOCS systems with pre-calibrated germanium detectors. The exercises included measurements of working standards in different surrogate matrices within a 55 gallon drum and within a standard waste box. The different templates used for modeling the waste packages are compared. An approach is presented for using the collected spectra to determine the isotopic composition of nuclear material.
