Recently developed, the SUMIC (subsea seismic) technique enables the acquisition of high quality shear-wave data at the seafloor. The key features of SUMIC data relative to conventional marine data are that they contain full elastic wave-field information and that the receivers are stationary in a lower noise environment during acquisition than conventional methods. The additional information provided by the shear waves makes it easier to infer accurate geological information about the subsurface. S-wave data enhance the reliability of lithology and fluid predictions from seismic data. Application of S-wave technology may improve reservoir descriptions by reducing uncertainty and adding to the level of details, thus making dynamic simulations more realistic. Improved reservoir description may facilitate more optimum reservoir management, the ultimate goal of which is to maximize the economic recovery of the field being produced.
