Global perspectives for E&C

Journal Article · · Independent Energy

Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies continue to face a competitive and somewhat uncertain business environment as the global electric generation business becomes more diversified. As engineer-construct (E&C) firms work with companies developing, financing, building and operating power facilities worldwide, they are finding a need for new approaches as they provide a variety of market-driven services to a changing and maturing power industry. Competition in the portion of the E&C marketplace that is independent power has created a need on the part of engineering constructors to recast the die and remove themselves from the traditional mold of EPC services.Today, such firms serve the developer by being a team leader and political facilitator for a particular project, often positioning themselves as an equity partner on a selected basis. And in some cases, EPC firms participate financially by being a debt or sub-debt provider. This article examines issues currently being encountered around the globe.
