This article is a review of recent discoveries of intergranular stress corrosion cracking within welds of stainless steel core shrouds with General Electric BWRs. The lastest finding is the discovery by Commonwealth Edison of horizontal 360 degree cracks around the outside of the core support plate ring weld on shrouds of two of its units in Illinois. Representatives from both the NRC and the vendor stated that the cracks pose no immediate safety threat. Similar cracks have recently been repaired at Brunswick Units 1 & 2.
