Electric Form Factor of the Proton through Recoil Polarization

The electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon, GE and GM, describe the charge and current distribution inside the nucleon and thus are quite intimately related to its structure. Jefferson Lab experiment 93-027 measured Pl and Pt, the longitudinal and transverse recoil proton polarization, respectively, for the 1H((vector-e,e'(vector-p)) reaction in the four-momentum transfer squared range of 0.5 to 3.5 GeV2, using the Hall A facility with two high resolution spectrometers and a Focal Plane Polarimeter. The ratio G(Ep)/G(Mp) is directly proportional to the ratio Pt/Pl. These data have unprecedented precision, and show for the first time that the Q2 dependence of G(Ep) and G(Mp) is very different.
