This report provides an insight into the strategic thinking of senior utility executives who are members of EPRI`s Customer Systems Group Committee. The report summarize upon a series of business strategies, proposals for new utility products, and suggestions for EPRI activities made by the executives in response to three hypothetical utility business scenarios. The scenarios were presented to participants in the form of a workshop during the October 1994 EPRI Customer Systems Group Committee meeting. The report details the specific utility business scenario facing each of the three teams participating in the workshop. It then presents the responses of each team to its particular scenario under the broad headings of key strategies, suggested new products and services, and expectations and opportunities for EPRI. This is followed by an analysis of the teams` responses including real-world examples of a variety of utilities that have pursued strategies similar to those suggested. Key strategic themes include customer segmentation, improved customer relations, innovative pricing, aggressive competition versus other fuels, and new value-added products and services. The teams showed a strong desire to focus on specific customer segments and reduce all costs. Pricing flexibility, innovative rates, and two-way customer communications technologies were common among the suggested new products and services. A major finding was that each of the scenario teams, regardless of their specific regulatory environment, focused strongly on competing for business against a variety of other service providers.
