For the past decade and a half, scientists have been happily developing a new picture of superconductivity based on the rich phenomena found in the copper-oxide compounds. These superconductors define fascinating new directions: high transition temperatures, weakly coupled layers, exotic states of vortex matter, pseudogaps, stripes, and applications in the power and electronics industries. Now comes a startling discovery from an unexpected corner: 40-K superconductivity in MgB{sub 2}.
