Optical parametric oscillators (OPO) and amplifiers (OPA) using beta-barium borate ({beta}-BaB{sub 2}O{sub 4} or BBO) and lithium triborate (LiB{sub 3}O{sub 5} or LBO) crystals have been used by many investigators to generate widely tunable, narrow bandwidth sources in the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared region. This paper presents prospects for average power scaling of BBO and LBO parametric devices in which thermal loading due to pump absorption sets scaling limitations through dephasing. An interferometric method for studying thermal dephasing in these crystal yields preliminary estimates for average power scaling.
