The free vibration natural frequencies of stiffened plates having different boundary conditions have been investigated. The plates are modeled by rectangular plates elements and the stiffener is modeled by exact beam elements. Eccentrically located stiffener as well as stiffener having its centroid coinciding with the middle surface of the plate is considered. Plates simply supported or held rigidly along the four edges are considered and the sub-space iteration technique is used to obtain the natural frequencies and the associated modes of vibrations. Investigations are carried out to study the effects of length, flexural rigidity and the location of the stiffener on the natural frequencies and the corresponding modes of vibration. In particular the cross over values of frequencies from one mode to another are discussed.
