Combined cycle plants routinely operate at a reliability of greater than 90% which is much higher than most other power plants. However, 90% may not be good enough. Plant performance data from similar combined cycle plants owned and operated by different companies show a wide variation in plant reliability and availability. The mission for the modern Maintenance Knight in Shining Armor is to reduce maintenance costs while increasing reliability. The details of this paper describe mechanisms for directing maintenance resources toward reducing current maintenance costs while maintaining high reliability and without sacrificing long term reliability. The strategies emphasized are: total productive maintenance, reliability centered maintenance, root cause analysis, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, just in time spare parts, and failure trend investigations.
