For years, feedwater heaters in both fossil and nuclear power plants have failed premature and/or deliver less than desired performance. Investigations by the Utilities, heater manufacturers, and EPRI have concluded that a vast majority of these problems can be traced to inadequate or improper liquid inventory in the heater. This paper will discuss the problem and its causes in detail, and describe an advanced feedwater heater control strategy that has been implemented to solve the root causes of the problem.
