This paper examines the use of the simulated annealing technique to improve the convergence of various ill-conditioned power flow calculations. A hybrid model between Newton-Raphson (NR) and simulated annealing (SA) methods is presented. The SA technique is employed to decide correction steps of NR solution variables. The proposed algorithm is robust in the sense that it can be easily incorporated in an existing load flow program. Moreover the proposed algorithm can be used to solve various types of ill-conditioned systems. Due to the nature of simulated annealing, the proposed method has two disadvantages: (1) it is slow and (2) it does not always guaranteed a convergent solution. Therefore, this algorithm is better used for planning purposes.
