Importance of the magnetic ground state of Pr for T{sub c} suppression in high-Tc superconductors.

Journal Article · · Europhy. Lett.

An increase in the magnetic, quasi-triplet average ground-state splitting of Pr in Pb{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}Pr{sub 0.5}Ca{sub 0.5}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 8} (T{sub c} = 60 K) compared to that observed for the parent, Ca-free compound, is observed by inelastic neutron scattering. The increase in splitting due to Ca doping demonstrates that Ca is altering the electronic properties of Pr in addition to its role in charge transfer. It is argued that Ca doping is effectively suppressing superconducting pair breaking by changing the single-ion magnetic properties of the Pr ions. This points toward pair breaking as the cause of T{sub c} suppression in Pr-based compounds.
