Effective steam reforming of mixed and heavy hydrocarbon feedstocks for the production of hydrogen

Conference ·
OSTI ID:93387
As a result of environmental legislation, there is an increase in the demand for supplementary hydrogen production using steam methane reforming on refineries. Furthermore, there is an increase in the amount of feedstocks heavier than natural gas, such as butane, which is available to be used for the steam reformer. ICI Katalco, with its long history in both the technology and catalysis of steam reforming, is well placed to consider the technical options available to a hydrogen plant operator for dealing with this change in feedstock. The options available, both on existing hydrogen plants of either the older CO{sub 2}-absorption type and the newer PSA-based plants, as well as for the design of new hydrogen plants, are reviewed in this article.
