On the Establishment of a Method for Characterization of Material Microstructure through Laser-based Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy

Journal Article · · IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control
Non-contacting laser-based resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements were made on a polycrystalline sample of high purity copper. The frequencies and shapes of 40 of the first 50 resonant vibrational modes were determined. The sample’s elastic constants were estimated by two methods: 1) bulk wave velocities, and 2) orientation imaging microscopy to measure crystallite orientations in a representative area of the sample. Agreement between the two theoretical approaches and experiment is quite good – mode frequencies are each within 8% of one another with an average difference of 0.6% per mode – verifying the nearly isotropic condition of the sample. The close agreement demonstrates that applying orientation imaging microscopy in combination with resonant ultrasound spectroscopy is a promising approach to characterizing microstructure. The Q of the resonant peaks was also examined. The Q of the laser-generated and -detected resonant ultrasound spectrum was 30% higher than a contact resonant ultrasound spectrum produced by applying a piezoelectric transducer pair for excitation and detection. The non-contacting nature of a laser measurement allowed for a purer measurement of the intrinsic acoustic attenuation mechanisms (i.e., internal friction) within the sample, imparting less influence from extrinsic attenuation due to transducer contact with the sample.
