A new drill-pipe protector test machine has been developed to determine operating limits and methods to enhance the reliability of drill-pipe protectors. This paper describes the test equipment, and discusses test data developed to aid in the design and use of pipe protectors. This new tester measures torque and speed as it rotates protectors against casing at loads up to 12,000 lbs. Fluid is pumped over the protector during the test to act as a coolant and lubricant. Previous tests using a casing wear test machine have shown that drill-pipe protectors can significantly reduce friction and casing wear when used properly. Protectors will slip and fail quickly on worn drill pipe, and protector deformation caused by high lateral loads can allow tool joints to contact the casing and cause excessive casing wear.
