The U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS) gave its SAFE (Safety Award for Excellence) awards to Enserch Corp. of Dallas and Forest Oil Corp. of Denver. That`s a particularly high honor and a difficult task in an industry that already is safer than retail sales. The American Petroleum Institute just came out with a study that shows petroleum exploration and production - once considered one of the more dangerous occupations - actually is one of the safest, and it`s getting safer. Job-related injuries and illnesses for petroleum exploration and production hovered at a recent high of 8.3 per 100 workers in 1987 and 1988. In 1992, it had dropped to only 6 injuries per 100 workers, but it eased back up to 6.1 per 100 in 1993. By contrast, the 1993 ratio was 6.8 for mining, 9.5 for transportation, 12.1 for manufacturing, and 8.2 for retail marketing. Comparing broad numbers, the petroleum industry posted a ratio of 5.5 injuries per 100 workers compared with 8.5 injuries per 100 workers for all U.S. industry. One reason for that enviable record is companies like Enserch and Forest. The safety programs of these companies are discussed.
