Green function approach to quantum confinement

Journal Article · · Physical Review B

We present a rigorous means of computing the electronicproperties of a confined system by perturbing the electronic propertiesof an unconfined, bulk system. Our approach focuses on the Green'sfunction of the confined system. We explain why it is preferable toconsider the confined Green's function rather than the confined energyeigenfunctions, and an expression for the change in the Green's functionproduced by quantum confinement is derived. Finally, we shift our focusto the eigenfunctions and derive approximate results for a sphericalnanocrystal with a Green's function methodology.
