A model for composite fracture termed the fiber bridging model is introduced in the present paper. Based on this model, an expression for the stress intensity factor is derived, and the influence of the fiber volume fraction and Young`s modulus ratio on the strengthening ability evaluated. In this paper, the conditions for the onset of matrix cracking is evaluated and a model proposed to analyze the fracture behavior of brittle matrix composites.
