Deformation and damage due to the low-velocity impact are investigated for graphite/epoxy laminates. The maximum impact force is predicted using a new approximate method on the impact force history, and a nonlinear static analysis considering the large deflection and the higher order shear deformation of the laminate is performed. Based on the maximum impact force, damage prediction is performed using a failure criterion on delamination, in which in-situ strengths computed by an analytical method of matrix failure has been used. Thermal residual stresses in curing process are also considered for the analysis. In experimental research, drop weight impact tests are performed and the deply technique is used to measure ply by ply delamination areas. Predicted damage areas are confirmed by the deply technique.
