Inversion of residual moveout after prestack time migration
- Exxon Production Research Co., Houston, TX (United States)
Techniques of general linearized inversion are applied to obtain velocity model updates from residual moveout observed after prestack, common offset time migration. The residual moveout observed in postmigrated CDP gathers is related to updates of a parametric description of the velocity field using an analytic formulation of prestack time migration and a linearization of the inverse problem. Model updates are obtained by iterative forward modeling of the postmigrated residual moveout and solution of the linearized equation set. A simple 2D example shows that the method can reconstruct the velocity distribution accurately. This method can be an efficient velocity estimation tool in regions where the initial prestack time migration can produce interpretable reflections.
