The Schatz Energy Research Center (SERC) performed a Fuel Cell Advanced Materials Research and Development Project with financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy (award number DE-FG02-03ER63585). SERC conducted this project in order to advance the state of the art in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell design and performance. The research was accomplished by testing current state-of-the-art fuel cell components from a variety of established vendors. SERC acquired membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), gas diffusion media (GDM), and graphite material from a variety of vendors. Different combinations of these materials were incorporated into SERCs existing fuel cell design with the goal of improving the performance and durability while decreasing the cost of the SERC fuel cell. Individual single cell test rigs were evaluated on a custom test stand with the capability to control and monitor up to four fuel cell stacks simultaneously. The test stand was designed and built by SERC engineers with funding from this project. This report summarizes SERCs accomplishments and findings on this research activity.
