Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico`s (SNL/NM`s) primary mission has been national security, with an emphasis on nuclear weapon development and engineering. In the process of carrying out this mission, SNL/NM has evolved into a multiprogram laboratory that undertakes fundamental and applied research and development activities that have involved the use of hazardous, radioactive, and asbestos-containing materials. Several buildings at SNL/NM have been in use for {approximately}50 yr, are potentially contaminated, and have been determined to be surplus to the SNL/NM mission. Although any contamination found in SNL/NM buildings has been below levels of concern for the occupants health and safety, there is a requirement for a decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) process to assess the potential risks and requirements before a building is demolished.
