Activities of HPS standards committees in environmental remediation

The Health Physics Society (HPS) has two American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited committees, N13 and N43. Under present procedures, the HPS has a Standards Committee (HPSSC), which develops and approves standards that are subsequently consensus balloted by the N13 committee. In 1992, the HPS Board of Directors requested a review of their standard-setting process in order to increase the board`s oversight, strengthen the organizational control and accountability, and reduce the overall potential for liability. One proposal is for the HPS to get organizational accreditation, such as the American Nuclear Society (ANS), with both N13 and N43 failing under the umbrella of organizational accreditation and reporting to the HPSSC, which, in turn, reports to the board of the HPS. As expected, this review process has sparked a lot of discussion, and final resolution and agreement has not been obtained yet.
