Title: Rheological characterization of nuclear waste using falling ball rheometry

Journal Article · · Transactions of the American Nuclear Society
OSTI ID:89360

Falling-ball rheometry has been investigated as a means to investigate the Hanford radioactive wastes. The method results in a better understanding of the viscous behavior of the simulant than other techniques tried. For the well-mixed suspensions, it is clear that the suspension can be treated as a homogenous fluid when the yield stress is not important. Near the yield stress, the material has a nonuniform behavior that could lead to processing problems where gravity-driven flows are used. If the flow rate is set, this will result in small changes in the overall resistance to flow.
