In the event of a small-break loss-of-coolant accident (SBLOCA) in the AP600, the automatic depressurization system (ADS) is designed to reduce the reactor coolant pressure to allow injection from passive, low-pressure safety systems. Entrainment in the upper plenum has the potential to affect the performance of the ADS, the liquid inventory in the reactor coolant system (RCS), and the likelihood of thermal excursions in the core. The purpose of this analysis was to determine the sensitivity of the AP600 to the effects of entrainment and deentrainment in the upper plenum after ADS actuation in an SBLOCA. Since experimental studies of the effects of entrainment and deentrainment in the upper plenum after ADS operation in an SBLOCA in the AP600 have not been performed, RELAP5/MOD3 calculations were performed to quantify the effects of reasonable variations in entrainment after ADS actuation during an SBLOCA. The calculations were performed for an interim (1993) design of the AP600.
