A diagnostic system has been developed that analyzes a local power range monitor signal to determine the global system stability characteristics of an operating boiling water reactor (BWR). The monitor identifies the emergent system behavior within the power signal using an {open_quotes}M-ary{close_quotes} (e.g., 4) hypothesis testing scheme. Each hypothesis corresponds to a specific decay ratio (DR). A parallel bank of discrete-time Kalman filters (each with their own, slightly different version of the system model) is used as a basis for the detection. The model producing the maximum {open_quotes}a posteriori{close_quotes} probability (MAP) provides the best estimate of the system stability, i.e., the DR.
