Title: How to calibrate the jet energy scale?

Abstract

Top quarks dominantly decay into b-quark jets and W bosons, and the W bosons often decay into jets, thus the precise determination of the jet energy scale is crucial in measurements of many top quark properties. I present the strategies used by the CDF and D0 collaborations to determine the jet energy scale. The various cross checks performed to verify the determined jet energy scale and evaluate its systematic uncertainty are also discussed.

  • A coupled adjoint-sensitivity/kriging approach was used to calibrate a groundwater-flow model to 10 years of human-induced transient hydraulic stresses at the WIPP site in New Mexico, USA. Transmissivity data obtained from local-scale hydraulic tests were first kriged to define an initial transmissivity distribution. Steady-state model calibration was then performed employing adjoint-sensitivity techniques to identify regions where transmissivity changes would improve the model fit to the observed steady-state heads. Subsequent transient calibration to large-scale hydraulic stresses created by shaft construction and long-term pumping tests aided in the identification of smaller scale features not detected during steady-state calibration. This transient calibration resultedmore » in a much more reliable and defendable model for use in performance-assessment calculations. 7 refs., 6 figs.« less
  • The IAEA International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) can be considered as the IAEA's response to the challenges of growing energy demand. INPRO's activities are intended to help to achieve one of the main objectives of the IAEA - to promote the development and peaceful use of nuclear energy. INPRO applies a carefully developed Methodology to assess Innovative Nuclear Energy Systems (INS) and to define R and D needs and deployment strategies for the development of large-scale regional and global INS. The purpose is to match the opportunities and challenges of sustainable energy supply provided bymore » nuclear energy (NE) to the global balance of demands and resources. (authors)« less
  • A major detector upgrade project is presently underway for the D0 experiment in preparation for Run 2 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider scheduled to begin in the year 2000. The upgrade is driven by the D0 Run 2 physics goals and by the higher event rates and backgrounds expected in the new high luminosity environment. A general overview of the D0 upgrade is given in the first part of this report. The second part describes the calibration of jets observed with the D0 detector at the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range E{sub T} > 8 GeV and {vert_bar}{eta}{vert_bar} < 3.

  • Calcium based brine has regularly been used during workover operations on naturally completed wells without any sign of formation damage. In gravel packed wells which have seen severe losses of Ca based brine production decline was observed. For some of the gravel packed wells the production decline occurred when bringing the well on production after completion, whilst in others, the loss in productivity occurred after sea water breakthrough. In order to increase productivity and confirm the relationship between productivity decline and formation of CaSO{sub 4} scale due to losses of completion brine, scale dissolver treatments were carried out. The usemore » of dissolver chemicals resulted in mobilization and removal of several hundred kilograms of solids from the near well-bore area. A post-evaluation strategy to provide information about the nature, origin and location of scale was successfully implemented. More importantly, the dissolver treatments resulted in increased oil production. The findings and lessons learned have had several important implications for gravel pack completions and well treatments in Statoil.« less
