To assist in the formulation of more effective public outreach at Argonne National Laboratory-West, a survey of utilities with nuclear facilities was carried out. We sought to gain information on the effectiveness of various public information efforts and to determine the attitudes of the people engaged in public outreach toward the future of nuclear power. A questionnaire, consisting of ten questions, was discussed in telephone interviews with public relations personnel from 38 utility companies. Forty-two persons were queried. Company representatives were asked if their company had a visitor center. Twenty-six companies have at least one center, and twelve utilities do not have centers. The utilities with visitor centers stated that their community relations are positively affected by their centers.
