Method of regionwise interpolation of U-Pu-Zr fuel properties in SAS4A/SASSYS-1 codes
- Argonne National Lab., IL (United States)
Models are being added to the SAS4A and SASSYS-1 liquid-metal reactor (LMR) accident and systems analysis codes to perform calculations for U-Pu-Zr metallic alloy fuels of different compositions. This paper presents a newly developed method (called regionwise interpolation) implemented in these codes to calculate the composition dependence of fuel thermal properties from data available for a limited number of alloy compositions. This method represents an improvement over our earlier method of developing fuel property correlations by fitting a multivariable function to the data because the method of regionwise interpolation exactly reproduces all the property database, and the property variation between the composition data points is linear, whereas a property correlation only approximately produces the database, and the property variation between the composition data points can be ill-behaved. Uncertainties in calculated fuel properties arising from uncertainties in the available data are also being implemented. To test the implementation of the method in SAS4A/SASSYS-1, a comparison of fuel temperatures computed using the regionwise-interpolated fuel properties versus a set of fitted property correlations has been performed for a loss-of-flow (LOF) transient in an Experimental Breeder Reactor II (EBR-II) Mark-V (U-20 Pu-10 Zr) fueled core. The effect of one standard deviation (1{sigma}) uncertainty in thermal conductivity on computed fuel temperatures is also included.
