The Advanced Liquid-Metal Reactor (ALMR) is a fast-neutron, liquid-metal-cooled, metal-fueled reactor. The reactor is specifically designed to utilize plutonium as the fissile component of its fuel. This reactor is a recent-generation, fast-neutron reactor being developed under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The design is a modular, seismically isolated, pool-type, sodium-cooled fast reactor with innovative, passive features to provide an extremely high level of public safety and the plan to demonstrate this safety to the public in a prototype test. Each module has 311 MW of electrical capacity, and a full-size plant consists of three power blocks with a total capacity of 1866 MW(electric). The ALMR will supply long-term electrical energy and can be used to safely disposition excess weapons plutonium. This paper describes the ALMR safety features and proposes utilization of the ALMR to disposition excess weapons plutonium.
