A variationally derived nodal method has been developed and implemented in both spectral element and finite element forms for the solution of one-speed, one-dimensional heterogeneous stab reactor problems. Unlike conventional nodal expansion methods our method does not employ node homogenized cross sections; instead an alternative lattice representation based on asymptotic theory is utilized. This form of trial function and the stationary property of a variational principle define a class of nodal methods that ate capable of efficiently achieving order-of-magnitude reductions of eigenvalue and pointwise scalar flux errors as compared to diffusion theory. In this paper we present a brief description of both a spectral element and a finite element implementation of this method and resent some test results.
