In 1989, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) embarked on an aggressive program to upgrade and standardize the training for those personnel operating and maintaining its category-A reactors, its high-hazard nonreactor nuclear facilities, and selected moderate-hazard nonreactor nuclear facilities. Officially, DOE`s signing of DOE Order 5480.18, {open_quotes}Accreditation of Performance-Based Training for Category A Reactors and Nuclear Facilities{close_quotes} on November 2, 1989, spearheaded the Training Accreditation Program: A Program of Excellence.
