Mineral Formation and Radionuclide Sorption in Waste Impacted Hanford Sediments

Leakage of caustic solutions from high level radioactive waste (HLRW) storage tanks drives sediment weathering reactions that may affect radionuclide sorption and precipitation. Batch experiments were conducted with three major sediment types from the Hanford Site (WA) to assess the effects of a synthetic waste solution on mineral transformation and uptake of Cs and Sr. Dissolution of sediment Si and subsequent precipitation with waste Al led to the formation of zeolite and feldspathoid solids coupled to uptake of Cs and Sr over 375 d reaction time.
